In the last two decades, the term “functional training” has gained its popularity and recognition through the booming industry of fitness, professional sport performance, and longer, stronger, healthier living. Everyone can benefit from the exercise progressions that functional training incorporates.

Let us begin this discussion defining the terms function and functional. The word function describes a “duty” or “intended purpose”. The term functional is defined as having a special task, duty, relating to how something or someone operates. Therefore, functional training is a general spectrum of progressive physical training that includes all the people and all the duties and functions of life. More importantly, what is functional for one person or thing, may not be functional for another.

The focus of functional training is to improve the working muscles an individual uses every day, making them more efficient and successful throughout daily activities, work, and sport.

What is your function? What functional training exercises would help you develop a stronger, more efficient you?
